National sprinter Cejhae Greene revealed he was quite excited to see the plethora of athletes presently on the local scene where track and field is concerned.

Greene’s comments stemmed from last month’s hosting of the National Track and Field Championships where a number of local talent was on display.

The professional sprinter mentioned that he was pleasantly surprised by the quantity of athletes competing.

“Actually, I am really, really happy to see the crop of athletes. That was actually a conversation I had on the last day with my father. We have a really good crop of athletes, young athletes coming through the ranks, and it’s not just let’s say male sprinters, it’s a little bit of everything. I see some jumpers, I see some female sprinters, the overall potential of what we have now is amazing.

“I don’t think I’ve seen overall, on a wide spectrum, how much potential we have at the particular moment at once,” Greene said.

When it came to the meet itself, Greene says he was elated to just be able to compete on home soil.

Nevertheless, Greene says that there are some areas that need some improvement.

“I think the national championships in themselves have so much potential to be something amazing, not just for us as athletes coming home, but just the people to be able to see all of us at a wide spectrum I think, just coming together and competing against each other, putting on a great show.

“Obviously, there are certain things like infrastructure that need to be done for it to really meet its full potential, but we have a track and we have a chance to compete and come and support so I am grateful for that,” he added.

He explained that it was a pleasure to see so many youngsters still interested in the sport and the key is to find avenues to keep them interested.

Other than infrastructure, the continued growth of the schools’ program is another area Greene says must continue to be worked on, as it is through the school competitions that true young raw talent is on display and then nurtured.
