AHTA chairman gives Antigua building standards a thumbs up

The Chairman of the Antigua Hotels and Tourist Association, Alex Debrito says he’s confident about the quality of the building standards in the country.
While hoteliers in Antigua look forward to the start of the winter tourist season in October, their counterparts in several other Caribbean countries are counting the loss from Hurricane Irma.
In St Dutch St. Maarten for example, Irma destroyed several hotels with footage showing some of them flattened by the powerful winds.
De Brito admits that Antigua escaped the full wrath of Irma but he says the country got very high winds.
Hurricane Irma destroyed about 95 per cent of the structures on Antigua’s sister-isle, Barbuda.
The Prime Minister Gaston Browne and other officials have attributed this to poor building standards in Barbuda.
Browne has said that the national building code will be adhered to when construction starts.
