About 50 people came together to extinguish a burning home in the village of Gray’s Farm according to Myrtle Hunkins, a local tour guide.

“I don’t really know what happened, but all I heard is my neighbour yelling fire and I sounded the alarm, calling my nephew and the others in the neighbourhood,  telling them to bring water because the house in the alley is on fire. And then everybody came together and threw buckets and basin and everything over the fire,” she explained.

She also added, “In all my years of living in Gray’s Farm, over 18 years, they call it the ghetto. They always say something bad. But I’m telling you, today I see community service. They still have good in Gray’s Farm.”

Sgt Nation of the Fire Department told Observer media that, “Just smoke was coming from the structure, so we just used water from the fire tender just to cool the area, and extinguished just a little part in the roof. But basically the room was completely destroyed, along with a foam mattress and some important documents.”

He indicated that the cause of the fire could not be determined without a proper investigation.

Apparently, the owner of the house lives in Parham, but her son was residing in the stricken property. She received a call from one of her neighbours letting her know that smoke was coming out of the house.

There have been no reported casualties so far.
