Stefano Mitchell captured Antigua and Barbuda’s second medal at the ongoing CCCAN Swimming Championships in Barbados when, on Monday night, he clocked 51.77 seconds to win silver in the boys 18 and over 100 meters freestyle event.

Mitchell was bettered only by Mexico’s Santiago Guido who won in a time of 51.28. Denzel Gonzalez of the Dominican Republic finished third in 52.27 seconds.

Mitchell’s achievement comes on the heels of a historic gold medal performance from female swimmer Ellie Shaw who, on Sunday, registered a new national record of 1:16.49 (one minute, 16.49 seconds) to become the first Antiguan and Barbudan female to win gold at championships.

Shaw, competing in the 13-15 age category, took the top podium spot in the 100 meters breaststroke event ahead of Venezuela’s Sara De Alba who clocked 1:18.31, and Guatemala’s Nicole Mack (1:18.80) who finished second and third, respectively.
