More than 400 non-essential Barbuda Council workers have been advised to take emergency leave due to Covid-19.

As the primary employer on the sister isle with 500-plus staff, Council employees represent about 85 per cent of Barbuda’s working population.

Up to 60 days’ emergency vacation from April 3 has been offered to those who are unable to perform their duties from home. Some of these people include administrative staff and cleaners.

The workers will continue to receive their base pay while on leave. They have been told to take the time to self-quarantine, isolate and practice social distancing.

The Council’s executive is compiling a list of unemployed and vulnerable people who may require assistance during the lockdown. That list is expected to be ready by next week.
