The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda will provide financial support to national basketball player, Lennox “Termite” McCoy, as he prepares for eye surgery in the United States of America (USA).
This was confirmed by Minister of Sports, Daryll Matthew, who said the move was overwhelmingly supported by his Cabinet colleagues.
“He’s a national athlete and just a few weeks ago, represented Antigua and Barbuda with distinction to a silver medal and arguably, if he had played in the finals we would have been bringing home the gold. So when that accident happened and damaged his left eye it was something that was shocking and traumatic to all of us,” Matthew said.
“He spoke to me and I made representation to the Cabinet on Wednesday and the prime minister and the minister of health in particular, jumped all over it and agreed we ought to do all we can to assist and support Lennox and so he will be getting that support from the government,” he added.
The national player was struck in his left eye by a resistance band that came loose from his bedroom door while he was working out at home.
McCoy was rushed to the Mount St. John’s Medical Centre on the day of the incident but has since been advised by a number of eye specialists to seek immediate medical assistance outside of Antigua and Barbuda.
The veteran player gave thanks for the support he has received, so far.
“I thank God for what he has done for me for the last two weeks. It’s been a remarkable recovery for me and now I am going to go and get the surgery done and I am very confident I have a very good chance of seeing again. [Prime Minister] Gaston Browne along with [Minister of Sports] Daryll Matthew, [Chief medical
officer] Rhonda Sealey-Thomas from health were able to help me offset some of the cost,” he said.
McCoy is slated to leave Antigua on Saturday for New York with expectations of having the surgery done on Tuesday of next week.
He has also received support from his local team Baldwin Braves as they have organised a number of fundraising events in his name.
