Cyclists will compete for thousands of dollars in prizes in the Antigua and Barbuda Workers Union (ABWU) Road Race on Sunday.

The race, which is hosted by the union but organised by the Antigua and Barbuda Cycling Federation (ABCF), is set to hand out cash prizes to winners across all divisions.

Second vice president of the cycling federation, Cleofoster Harris, said the event is popular amongst cyclists for this very reason.

“Because the union is a social organisation, we must always look out for the society … it is more health driven, hoping that more people will go to the cycling association or find some other sporting event that they can be comfortable with,” he said.

Harris said the federation is anticipating an increase in registration numbers for Sunday’s race.

“We just came off a time trial last weekend and so the members are duly notified and we are expecting them to show up in their numbers on Sunday. The purse in this event are very substantial and the cyclists like this event because of the heaviness of the purse the union extends, so we thank them for the prize they make available for this event,” he said.

Meanwhile, President of the Antigua and Barbuda Workers Union, Kem Riley, said the aim is to encourage more physical activities amongst the populous.

“Last year we had 25 cyclists and we had four persons who came in terms of our regional counterparts. So this event is not only tailored to our local cyclists, but we at the federation do try to export the event and have the inclusion of other regional cyclists to come across to Antigua to boost the competition,” he said.

Registration for the event is EC $20 for members and US $20 for non-members and can be done at the union’s headquarters between 7:45 and 8:45 on the morning of the event. The race is set to pedal off at 9am.
