Hands Up Foundation (HUF) Baldwin Braves levelled their intense best-of-five playoff basketball finals against Flyers 1-1 on Sunday, winning game 2 by three points.
Contesting the feature match of a double-header at the JSC basketball court, Braves came from a 12-point deficit at the end of the third quarter, outscoring Flyers 25-14 in the final quarter to take the exciting contest 79-76.
Xavier Meade led the way for Braves, sinking a game high 28 points.
Captain of the Braves team and a former national player, Lennox McCoy, said his team was just better on the night.
“We had a lot more energy to the ball where we were quicker to the ball and we were just more desperate. That is what I was trying to explain to everyone last week, that in game 2, you are going to find that we are quicker to the ball. We are going to have a little more energy and that’s just basketball,” he said.
“Even last night [Sunday], I think I saw a few different things we are going to approach in game 3 to counteract because they are going to come with a little more energy like they did in game 1 and so we have to match that intensity,” he added.
Meanwhile, Russel Daley led the way for Flyers, hitting 20 points and four assists.
Coach of the Flyers team, George Hughes, said his young squad will simply adapt and move on.
“They came to play, nobody wants to lose and we made some critical errors in the dying moments of the game but we will be better out of it. The game is a game of runs and we didn’t do very well of sustaining a run that they made and as a matter of a fact, one of our players basically killed our team so we’ll have to fix that and move onto the next game,” he said.
Meanwhile, Ottos Coolers destroyed Old Road Daggers 70-39 to take a 2-1 series lead in their Third Division playoff finals in Sunday’s opening match.
Lincoln Weekes led the scoring for the victors with 21 points while Ezekiel Francois top-scored for Old Road with 13 points, grabbed 17 rebounds, four steals and five blocked shots.
The teams are scheduled to lock horns on Thursday for game 4 at the JSC basketball complex.
