Thousands of families and businesses whose utility bills are in arrears have been placed on notice by the Antigua and Barbuda Public Utilities Authority (APUA) that their services may be disconnected from February 1.

APUA’s Covid-19 Utility Relief Effort – introduced nine months ago – included the waiver of disconnections of utility services, along with an increase to the discount on electricity accounts.

These benefits were shared across residential and commercial services.

However, in a press statement issued yesterday, the company said it has developed criteria to assist residents who continue to experience financial difficulties

“Further, the 15 percent discount will revert to 10 percent for residential accounts and will discontinue for commercial services on the same date [February 1 2021)” the release advised.

APUA has justified the new measures by stating that it has suffered “the ramification of a challenging fiscal year while maintaining reliable service delivery in its unbroken pursuit to support the lives and livelihoods of the people of Antigua and Barbuda”.

The company also used its press statement to commend those who they said “have managed to keep their accounts up to date in the most challenging of times”.

Consumers who are unable to settle their accounts are asked to schedule an appointment with APUA’s Credit Control Department to discuss a payment plan.
