Williams: Under-20s deserve more recognition

The country’s football technical director, Rolston Williams, has hit out at both the public and the media for not duly recognising the achievements of the country’s men’s Under-20 football team.
The young Benna Boys will play in next month’s CONCACAF Under-20 Men’s Championships Finals in Costa Rica after they finished second in the Caribbean Football Union leg of the competition in November of 2016.
According to Williams however, the players have not received their deserved recognition.
“I think more must be said, more must be said of these young players. Two of them, soon, will be off in a professional league and one is being looked at again,” he said.
Antigua & Barbuda will contest Group A of next month’s tournament alongside Mexico, Honduras and Canada with their opening fixture against Mexico at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa Stadium.
Williams accused both the public and the media of not understanding the importance of the team’s historic qualification.
“I don’t think that we understand the magnitude of this team and where we’re at and the support. The reality is that everyone knows that this team is going to the finals of a CONCACAF competition and no team in this country has ever gone to a final of a CONCACAF competition,” he said.
The players, Williams said, are in their third week of preparation, taking into consideration their participation in the ongoing domestic season.
The team will also travel to Costa Rica two weeks ahead of the scheduled start for a camp.
