Young aspiring volleyball players will be given an opportunity to get their feet wet during the Christ the King High School (CKHS) Volleyball Camp slated for December 19-23 at the YMCA indoor facility.

Organiser and volleyball coach at the Christ the King High School, Farida Isaac Carr, said the camp will be accepting children as young as nine years old.

“I am actually targeting a younger age group than normal cause normally, most of the time, persons come into volleyball through the secondary schools at around 11 or 12 years old, so we’re starting a little behind the curve for most people or for most players because they are just learning at 11 or 12. We are hoping to build a foundation where we have younger players coming in so by the time they hit secondary school we have a full fledged volleyball competitive team going,” she said.

Carr, who recently became a certified level one coach, said she felt compelled to put on the camp as it would provide the newly certified coaches with the opportunity to put what they have learned to good use, while providing the young players with an opportunity to get an early start.

“This year, in August, about 10 or so, or more coaches came out to get certified in volleyball, and I was one of them. There were a number of other participants who got certified as level one coaches in beach volleyball as well as indoor volleyball, so I think it was a good opportunity to actually start putting the training into use, and this will give us the opportunity, and it’s not just for me as the Christ the King coach, but we are also going to have a number of the other coaches come in and help so we can build up the game,” the coach said.

The camp carries a registration fee of $95.00 which will go towards meals, transportation and equipment for participants. Registration, which closes on December 10, can be done at the YMCA Sports Complex between the hours of 12:00 noon and 1:00 pm.
