It was with a deep sense of sadness and loss that I received the news about the passing of Sir Fenton Ramsahoye earlier today [Thursday 27 December 2018].
Sir Fenton was an outstanding Caribbean legal luminary and a friend of Antigua and Barbuda.
He made himself available to fight cases and defend causes wherever and whenever justice was at stake. Many benefitted from his scholarly research and passionate advocacy. He was a titan in the courtroom.
His defense of the constitutional rights of citizens is legendary. He was fearless in the way he challenged the arbitrary exercise of authority by governments and powerful institutions.
As a mark of honor, respect and recognition he was awarded a knighthood under the National Honors Act of Antigua and Barbuda in 2006.
His indelible legacy of service to the Caribbean will serve as an inspiration to all who love justice and are willing to speak truth to power. He was indeed a people’s champion. We shall remember his forensic skill, his sharp intellect and dry sense of humor.
On behalf of the United Progressive Party I extend condolences to the family of Dr. Sir Fenton Ramsahoye.
