After organising a crowd-funding campaign to aid the rebuilding effort in Barbuds, Alice Bolton of the U.K. distributed two containers filled with building supplies.
Bolton told OBSERVER media yesterday that she has been visiting Barbuda since she was a child, and felt compelled to respond after witnessing first-hand the devastation caused by Hurricane Irma two months ago.
Over 70 hand saws, 80 hammers, 200 sheets of plywood, 100 sheets of galvanise, hand tools and pliers, 50 paint brushes and rollers, 50 tape measures, hundreds of screws, nails, and bolts, lumber as well as pillows, clothes, bed sheets, pet food and toiletries were distributed to residents.
“Two shipping containers of materials were never going to stretch that far, but it’s a great start,” Bolton wrote on Facebook.
“There are still thousands of nails and screws, as well as power tools which we now hope to operate on a free hire/sign-out and sign-in system which will continue this way until the end of the year, when we will review it and see what’s the best way in moving forward.”
With the help of friends and family and a few U.K. sponsors, Bolton said that money was raised to fund building supplies for the clean-up and repair of homes on Barbuda.
Bolton said that the items were distributed two weeks ago.
The British national has since returned to the U.K. and plans to visit Barbuda again to offer further assistance.
The GoFundMe campaign “Help Barbuda” was started two months ago and raised £23,391, four times more than the intended target.
Bolton extended thanks to Asha Hope, Dane John and James John for their help in unloading and organising, and Doug and Leah for help in shelf-building, shelf-stacking and wood-chopping.
Special thanks were also extended to B.J. & C. Carberry, Goodwood Road Racing, Mark Black at Portable Space, Stage One Creative, Ken Fleary at Scott Fleary Ltd., Zoe Parsons and Megan Elizabeth Harrison in the U.K.
