It was celebration time for Antigua and Barbuda Transport Board as they secured double titles in the Cool and Smooth Digicel Business Basketball league on Wednesday night.
The champions defeated APUA Head Office, 82-71 at the JSC Sports Complex ending the series 2-0.
The journey to securing the playoff title was not an easy one as APUA gave it their all trading baskets with Transport Board throughout the entire match.
Experience would once again reign supreme as veteran player, Marlon “Buju” Charles and high-flyer Kareem “Mackky” Edwards left JSC in awe with their fancy footwork and shot-making ability, leaving APUA visibly frustrated.
Despite an 18-point effort from Olivee’ Morris and a 16-point effort from Nickon McGregor, APUA would have no answer for Edwards or Charles who ended the match scoring 33 and 30 points, respectively.
In addition to claiming the league and playoff titles, Transport Board walked away with a number of other individual awards to include the Coach of the Year award which went to Wayne Coates, Playoffs MVP to Marlon “Buju” Charles and League MVP and Most Three-pointers in a single game which was awarded to Bryan “Hollywood” Matthew.
APUA Head Office did not go home empty-handed as they were awarded trophies for second place in the Playoffs and third in the league.
Sandals claimed the second-place trophy in the league and player, Devorn Benjamin secured the Most Points in a Single game and Top Scorer awards.
Barbudans, Cohen Desouza and Jameel Charles were also given awards that evening.
Desouza was named the Most Outstanding Player in the league while Charles grabbed the title as Block Shot King.
The People’s Choice award went to Franklyn “Spiderman” Corbett of Cleaners while Anjo’s Zyebe Barnes took home the Shaq’tin A Fool Award.
DeCastro Walbrook also from Anjo Wholesale grabbed the award for the Most Sensational dunk while the A-mobile Young Rivals team were named the Most Spirited team.
“We are extremely pleased with how the 2017 business league was run. We want to say a hearty thank you to the president and his executive for once again giving us the opportunity to once again coordinate the programme,” said Carl Knight, one of the Coordinators of the league.
Knight then went on to thank sponsors, Cool and Smooth, for their continued support of the league and sports in Antigua and the fans for coming out every night.
The former national player also thanked and pledged to the participating business teams for a better season next year.
“We thank all the business places that participated this year and we pledge to improve on whatever issues we had to make next season more fun,” Knight said.
