The government is reviewing several options with regards to the construction of a prison, as the current jail population remains more than double the number the current facility was built to accommodate.
The attorney general, Steadroy Benjamin, said the offers aren’t all the same.
“I am pleased to state that my department now has three offers to build the prison. We are looking at three models.
There are some who are coming to BOOT, Build, Own, Operate and Transfer, we are looking at that,” he made the statement yesterday after being sworn in.
The prison building was initially a sick bay for soldiers built to accommodate 150 people.
Currently, though, there are over 300 men and women behind bars, making the facility severely overcrowded.
“There are several international bodies which came to the country, understood us and are prepared to assist us in construction. We are now looking at all of our options and very shortly I will be initiating and telling you about all of the people.
