Newbies Potters Steelers silenced the critics on Sunday night in the first Division of the Antigua and Barbuda Basketball Association (ABBA) league as they defeated LJ Northside Stingerz, 89-80 at the JSC Sports Complex.
Steelers laid to rest the remarks made by captain of the Baldwin Braves, Lennox “Termite” McCoy, who said that the team did not have any ‘legitimate wins’ under its belt and was, more or less overrated, having lost all its first-round matches to the top five teams except Braves.
Head Coach and living legend Rowan “Tekel” Gomes also refuted those claims and went on to assure the public that his team, after its short journey from division three to one, only proves that it will and is “going places.”
It was a true team effort for the new kids on the block as Felix Hamilton led the charge for the victors with 22 points and CBA player, Joshua Minner contributed 21 points and 13 rebounds.
Benny Iko (CBA player) also chipped in netting 20 points and 11 rebounds, while teammate, Adissa “Rass-I” Harris was a man on a mission with 17 points.
Keroi “Dragon” Lee of Stingerz had a game-high 30 points and 10 rebounds.
The 2017 League MVP Vivian “Boast” Destin chipped in with 25 points while teammate, Coy Quinland had 13 points and eight rebounds.
Former champions, Flyers Basketball, won their 7th straight game trouncing Yorks Crushers, 81-58.
Adonis Humphreys was an unstoppable force with a game-high 20 points, 25 rebounds and six blocked shots.
He was assisted by Kenya Achom who had 16 points, six assists and eight steals.
New addition, Yoannis Soria chipped in with 16 points and seven rebounds while CBA player, Torey Fassett sank 12 points and snatched eight rebounds for the victors.
“Adonis can be a monster….but needs to play for himself and to his abilities. Sky is the limit if he does just that,” said Head Coach of the Flyers team, George Hughes.
Crushers’ Cohen DeSouza had 20 points and 11 rebounds while teammate, Tony Nedd contributed with 12 points and eight rebounds in a losing effort.
