Six of the eight Central Basketball Association (CBA) players were selected by five of ten Antigua and Barbuda Basketball Association (ABBA) Division One teams in the first ever ABBA/CBA Draft. The draft took place on Sunday night at the JSC Sports Complex immediately following the second scrimmage between the CBA players and the men’s senior national team, the Bulldogs.
Twenty-three-year-old guard, Dontarion “Showtime” Wright, was the first official pick in the two-round event. That pick was made by newly-promoted team, Rebels. James McCombs and Yahshua Perez were the two players who were not selected and willreturn to the U.S. later this month.
The players who were featured on the Good Morning JoJo Sports show on Monday expressed their excitement and gratitude to have been given the opportunity and promised to bring something new to their respective teams and basketball fans. The league competition, which was pushed back from its original January 20th date, will shoot off on January 27th. Due to the one-week postponement, the deadline for registration has also been pushed back to the 18th of this month rather than January 14th.
