Senior police officer granted bail in death of elderly cyclist

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Oct 16, CMC – A senior police officer has been granted GUY$250,000 (One Guyana dollar=US$0.004 cents) bail and will re-appear in court on November 12 on charge related to the death of a 64-year-old cyclist.
Deputy Superintendent of Police, Patrick Todd, stood before Magistrate Rochelle Liverpool at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday to answer the charges a day after the Director of Public Prosecutions said he should be charged.
He pleaded not guilty to the charges of causing death by dangerous driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.
The court heard that on September 12, 2018, Todd drove his vehicle in a dangerous manner and caused the death of Conrad Alleyne, who was riding his bicycle across a bridge. He later died at a hospital.
The prosecution is also alleging that the senior cop was under the influence of alcohol while operating the motorcar and that a breathalyzer test showed him to be over the legal alcohol limit by more than 35 mircograms.
His attorney Dexter Todd, in his application for bail, said the accused is the father of four children and is expecting another child soon.
