Quarry Workers Protesting for Overtime Pay

Workers at the Bendals and Burma Quarries are protesting again. They are into their second week of protest, this time for promised overtime pay from their employers.
“We are in November,”one of the workers, Keithroy Merchant, told OBSERVER media yesterday, as he explained that they were expected to be paid overtime since January this year.
“They keep pushing us around, telling us this and telling us that, so we decide to go on a go slow. Enough is enough,” he told our newsroom.
The men say they have been working from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday to Sunday and in some cases, 
they would go until midnight.
The overtime work was necessary to facilitate the asphalt and concrete plant that uses aggregate for the road project.
“We played our part. We worked and now they refuse to play their part,” he 
said.
The Quarry workers claim that they had meetings with the Minister of Works, Lennox Weston, who promised to have their overtime paid, at least for the first six months.
“But up till now we haven’t received anything. We are fed up,” Merchant said.
The go slow is expected to continue until the overtime monies are paid, a move that Merchant said their union – the Antigua Trade and Labour Union- has approved.
