In celebration of International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, we shine a spotlight on Pearl Quinn Williams, a caretaker representative of the United Progressive Party (UPP).
Her passion for inclusivity and positive change is reshaping the political landscape in her community.
For Pearl, politics isn’t just a profession—it’s a profound commitment to serving her constituents and advocating for a more equitable society.
When asked about the significance of International Women’s Day’s theme, “Inspiring Inclusion,” Quinn Williams emphasised the importance of fostering an environment free from discrimination and prejudice.
“For me, it means that there is no room for discrimination, prejudice, intolerance, denigration, hate, negativity, misogyny, insularity and blind partisanship. It means we must make room for bi-partisanship, for approbation, positivity, tolerance, fairness, open-mindedness and objectivity.”
Pearl’s journey into elective politics was inspired by the voices of her community members who saw in her the potential for genuine leadership.
“The people. After the CCJ debate, almost everywhere I went, people would tell me, ‘We need people like you in parliament,’ but that was far from my mind. In fact, one person said to me ‘It looks like we’re going to have to come into the bank and drag you out of there, to get you to serve the people in Parliament’.”
Their encouragement propelled her to step into the realm of politics, driven by a desire to enact positive change and amplify the voices of those she represents.
Reflecting on her biggest mentor and role model, Pearl pays tribute to her late mother, Mary Geo Quinn, whose unwavering principles and values continue to guide her.
Through her mother’s teachings, Pearl learned the importance of integrity, compassion, and the power of leading by example.
She carries these lessons with her as she navigates the complex landscape of politics, always striving to make a positive impact on the lives of others.
Since joining elective politics, Pearl has utilised her platform to uplift her community in various ways.
From providing job interview training, to assisting students with academic support, Pearl is deeply invested in the well-being and advancement of her constituents.
She also extends a helping hand to the less fortunate by offering essential supplies and advocating for their needs within the community.
Furthermore, Pearl actively addresses infrastructure and environmental issues that affect her constituents, ensuring their voices are heard by the relevant authorities.
Through her dedication and tireless advocacy, Pearl is paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable society, where every individual has the opportunity to thrive.
As we commemorate International Women’s Day, her leadership serves as a beacon of hope and a reminder that through collective action, we can create a brighter and more inclusive future for all.
