Professional tennis player Jody Maginley said he was “a bit unlucky” following his first round loss to Peter Bertran of the Dominican Republic in the men’s singles competition at the Pan American Games on Monday.

“I thought I started the match decent and I usually play well in the first and had some chances at the end to break, to get back on serve at the end of the set, but he closed it out. I started the second very well and felt like I was controlling a lot of the set. I was up to break, and a few things went against me and then they had three or four set points for the tie break and I honestly didn’t feel like I was doing badly and thought I was a bit unlucky. I thought at times that he as shaky but in the big moments I guess he hit the spots and matches like these are determined off a few points but that’s all I can do,” he said.

Maginley was beaten 6-4, 7-6 in the round of 64, exiting the Santiago, Chile games after just one round.

Asked if conditions in Chile affected his game in anyway, Maginley said that was not the case.

“The conditions are pretty good for playing, it’s not hot because I train in a lot hotter conditions than this so physically maybe it was just tough because it’s a little bit slow, the clay is a little bit slower but the heat itself is fine,” the player said.

Female sprinter LaNika Locker goes into action early next week with kiteboarder Tiger Tyson and sailor Jules Mitchell also set to compete next week.
