Early exit for Under-18 tennis players in Barbados

It was a tough day for Antigua and Barbuda at the Barbados Jr. Invitational this week as all three of the country’s players were knocked out of the competition being played at the Barbados National Tennis Center. Playing the boys Under18 Main Draw, Rondaine Monelle – after qualifying over the weekend – lost to Jonathan Laforest of the USA 6-0, 6-0.

The Antiguan then joined forces with Barbados’ Torain Alleyne in the doubles but lost 6-1, 6-4 to the pair of Freddy Ridout of Great Britain and Maxx William of St. Lucia. There was disappointment as well for Selene Kentish who went down to the USA’s Selena Bird, 6-2, 6-1.

The Antiguan also lost in the doubles alongside Denmark’s Emma Kjaer as they went down to Anna Kayer of the USA and Sana Hewitt of Barbados by 6-4, 6-3 margins. The country’s other player at the tournament, Kiana King, was defeated by Charlotte Carttledge of the USA 6-0, 6-0.

The Antigua and Barbuda Tennis Association (ABTA) will now turn its attention to the staging of its National Under-12 Championships slated for Saturday at the National Tennis Center in Campsite.
