With all the distractions of the holiday season, the police are warning residents not to forget about safety and security. The police Office of Strategic Communications (STRATCOM) warned that thefts can become more frequent partly because of an increase in opportunity.
From being alert at all times, and avoiding walks in remote and poorly-lit areas, to Automated Teller Machines (ATM) caution, the police are urging residents, specifically those leaving their homes to do holiday shopping in the busy city, to remain alert and follow the crime-prevention tips issued by STRATCOM. “If, for any reason, you are being attacked or robbed, please stay calm and alert as much as possible.
Cooperate with your attacker, as this can help you to provide the police with a proper description of your attacker,” reads one of the tips put out by police on social media. Homeowners should always ensure that their homes are properly locked and secured, especially before leaving home, and no one should leave keys in hiding places for other members of the household.
This can provide thieves with access to one’s home. Another tip cautioned against shoppers carrying large amounts of cash because the carrier can fall victim to pickpockets and bag-snatchers.
