Residents and visitors are again being warned of the dangers lurking while relaxing on beaches and at remote areas around the country, following a recent kidnapping.
Inspector Frankie Thomas, police public relations officer, said a 27-year-old man of Potters, and his 31-year-old girlfriend of St. Johnston Village were abducted from the Old Runway Beach after 10 o’clock on Tuesday night by two masked gunmen, who forced them into a silver Grand Vitara SUV.
The police report state that the young woman picked up her boyfriend in the vehicle, registration plate A34674, and drove to the beach.
“Having seen these types of incidents, we want to appeal to members of the general public to avoid these remote areas, especially at late hours of the night, and in those poorly lit places. We strongly caution against this because criminal elements use the cover of night,” Thomas said.
Several people have been questioned in connection with Tuesday night’s abduction of the couple who were unharmed by the armed assailants.
The report to the police stated that the hands of the Potters man were duct taped and he was placed in the trunk of the vehicle, while the female was placed in the rear seat.
The gunmen then drove to the man’s home and stole his grey Hyundai A43502 and his wallet containing $700.
The perpetrators drove the couple in separate vehicles to a remote location in Freetown where the couple was abandoned and their cellphones, collectively valued at $800, and both of the vehicles were stolen
The man and woman managed to free their hands and found someone who assisted them by calling the police.
The SUV was later discovered by police in some bushes, not too far from where the couple was forced out of the vehicles.
Thomas said several people have been interviewed since the report was filed but up to yesterday, no one had been held for the crimes and the second vehicle was not recovered.
The abduction has prompted a major police investigation and the hunt is on for the two assailants.
The assailants were dressed in dark clothing. One was described as approximately five feet, four inches tall and was carrying a chrome handgun. The other was said to be five feet, 10 inches tall, dark in complexion with thick lips and he was carrying a black handgun.
Lawmen are asking anyone who may have information that could assist them in their investigation or may know of the whereabouts of the gunmen to call the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at 462-3913 or 462-3914.
