National cyclist Andre Simon is on his final journey home with his body set to arrive in Antigua today.

A funeral for the 36-year-old is scheduled for July 10 at the St John’s Pentecostal Church in Upper Gambles.

The father-of-one was seriously injured in a horrific accident on Mother’s Day last year when a motorist ploughed into him and three other cyclists during a training ride on Sir George Walter Highway.

While the others received minor injuries, Simon was left in a critical condition. A Hatton man, Kenyatta Benjamin, is facing criminal charges in connection with the incident.

Simon spent weeks in the Intensive Care Unit at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre before he was transported to Texas for specialist treatment in July 2022. In recent months he had overcome a number of setbacks, triggering hopes that he would make a recovery.

On June 8, the nation was plunged into mourning upon the news of his passing.
