It was a day of mixed emotions for three young national tennis players at the JITIC Caribbean tournament in Trinidad.
Sibley Charles and Brasher Dyer, although beaten in their final matches of the round-robin competition, both advanced to the Grade 1 Main Draw competition.
Brasher, on Monday, went under 4-0, 4-2 to Guyana’s Anika Lemus while Charles lost 5-3, 4-2 to Ana Camila Garcia of Guyana. Another Antiguan player, Samaar Davis, was defeated by Rocio Espinal of the Dominican Republic.
Charles and Dyer were however, unlucky in the singles competition. Dyer was beaten by number one seed Espinal, going down 6-1, 6-1 in the first round. Charles suffered a similar fate, falling to the number three seed Mariela Fortuny of Guyana 6-4, 6-1. Both Charles and Dyer will now turn their attention to the doubles competition.
Davis has however moved into the second draw of the Grade 3 competition.
