In an interesting move, Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle has announced that MP for St Phillip South, Sherfield Bowen, will serve as the new United Progressive Party’s (UPP) Deputy Leader.

Pringle made the announcement at the UPP’s General Council meeting yesterday, stating that Bowen’s “experience, wisdom, knowledge of the law, and certification as an accountant” were key factors behind his selection.

When asked if the surprise appointment could cause division within the party ranks, especially as some thought that Richard Lewis to get the deputy role, Pringle dismissed those concerns.

“The political leader has the ultimate power in appointing his deputy and we have to focus on building the Party, building the country,” Pringle stated.

“I believe in any capacity that we are called to serve, we will answer that call.”

Pringle also hinted at other “strategic moves” on the horizon for the UPP as it gears up for the next general elections, including the selection of its slate of candidates which he said will be happening “shortly.”

With Bowen now being promoted to one of the top leadership roles in the UPP, it remains to be seen how this high-profile appointment will play out politically for the Opposition Party as it seeks to unseat the incumbent government in the upcoming elections.
