A resident of Swetes admitted to having over 140 grammes of marijuana in his possession when he appeared before Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel in the District B Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
However, Rondre Robinson, who was remanded to His Majesty’s Prison to await sentencing, will know his fate today.
The 21-year-old man was taken into custody after officers from the Special Services Unit and the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force who were on mobile patrol stopped his vehicle on January 8.
At about 8:40 pm, while in the vicinity of the Sea View Farm Primary School, the officers stopped the vehicle which was missing a front licence plate. It was occupied by a young man and woman who were not wearing their seatbelts, which is a violation of traffic regulations.
The officers subsequently conducted a search of the vehicle during which they found five transparent plastic bags containing marijuana.
Robinson immediately took responsibility for the illegal substance saying: “It’s my weed, Officer.”
He was informed of the law that stipulated no one is allowed to have more than 15 grammes of cannabis in their possession at any one time.
Robinson, a car washer by profession, was subsequently arrested and charged for the offence.
The illegal drugs, which weighed 142.5 grammes, had an estimated street value of $1,425.
Robinson, who is known to the court, has previous convictions for two similar offences.
He was represented by attorney Michael Archibald.
