Authorities at the West Indies Oil Company Limited (WIOC) have been able to contain an oil leak, which was discovered around 11am on Sunday in one of its fuel lines to the airport.

The company issued a statement Sunday afternoon indicating that the source of the leak was identified in vicinity of Wenty’s Apartments and Toy Toy Restaurant along upper Fort Road.

WIOC said the leak has been contained in the public drain, therefore no product leaked onto private properties.

The company said its maintenance and terminal staff have taken the necessary emergency procedures to mitigate the leak and facilitate repair of the ruptured line, and that the fuel line leading to the site of the leak has been blocked.

“The remaining product in the line is being drained via vacuum trucks and the leak site excavated. The drains around the leak site will be thoroughly flushed to remove any remnants of product,” the company said.

WIOC has since asked motorists and residents to avoid the area due to the flammable nature of leaking product and strong jet fuel smell.

Member of the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda also assisted with managing traffic around the leak site, while the Fire Department and Environmental Division were notified.
