Worldwide Money Transfer company, Western Union, is expected to re-open its operations in Antigua within the coming months, after its departure from the twin island more than a year ago.

OBSERVER media understands that a well-established conglomerate will be taking over the operations with at least two branches, one within the Pigotts Mall on Market and Redcliffe Streets and the other opposite the Courts branch on lower All Saints Road.

OBSERVER media subsequently reached out to a representative of the conglomerate, who indicated that while there is no denial of the Western Union re-starting its local operations, no comment could be made at this time.

In May 2018, a source close to the matter told OBSERVER media that the money transfer agency had to take steps to become more compliant with anti-money laundering systems and protocols, which are monitored by the Office of National Drug and Money Laundering Control Policy (ONDCP).

It was believed then, that the best way to carry out upgrades to the Western Union System was to close completely.
