Captain of the Leeward Islands Hurricanes and former West Indies spinner, Rahkeem Cornwall, believes the sub-regional squad could go all the way in this year’s West Indies Championships (four day competition).

His prediction follows the team’s crushing 402 runs triumph over West Indies Academy within three days here at the Coolidge Cricket Ground (CCG).

“It was a good win, the way we set up the game from day one, I think, put us in a good position to win the game. I think the team will grow from strength to strength as we have a few guys coming back from Test cricket and I think we really have a good chance of winning the championship,” he said.

Chasing an improbable 502 for victory, West Indies Academy were removed for just 100 on day three of the contest to hand Hurricanes the comfortable win. Vice captain of the Hurricanes team, Hayden Walsh Jr picked up a five-for, claiming five wickets for 24 runs in 6.5 overs. He was assisted by Cornwall who claimed four for 41 in 13 overs.

Cornwall, who finished with figures of 7 for 74 in the match, suggested that some players may still be adjusting to the introduction of a new make of ball for this season.

“We just have to be more patient with the Kookaburra ball because the Kookaburra ball is a little different from the Duke ball but the batsmen have gotten starts and just need to carry on and get hundreds; that’s just it,” the Antiguan said.

Hurricanes, in their second innings, had posted 289 for 9 declared with three players getting half centuries. Earlier, after being asked to bat, Hurricanes posted 358 all out in 103.2 overs in their first innings before bowling out Academy for 145.

Hurricanes will next face the Jamaica Scorpions starting February 5 at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.
