The US Embassy for Barbados, the Eastern Caribbean, and the OECS, in a release yesterday, said it is closely monitoring the recent demonstrations in Dominica, and is therefore urging US government personnel and others to exercise caution if they plan to travel to Dominica over the next several weeks, “since demonstrations and protests are expected in advance of elections on December 6th , 2019.

It pointed out that since recent demonstrations have involved police use of tear gas, US citizens are being urged to avoid demonstrations; monitor local media houses for updates; keep a low profile; and to be aware of their surroundings.

“We urge those exercising their freedom of assembly to do so responsibly, to avoid violence, and to prevent an escalation of tensions.

“We also urge the Government of Dominica to allow peaceful protesters to exercise their rights as provided by the Dominica Constitution and laws. “As Dominica prepares for national elections on December 6th, we encourage respect for the rule of law and the conduct of a transparent democratic process,” the release concluded.
