University student among six killed in western Jamaica

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Apr 10, CMC – A university and a 16-year-old student were among six people shot and killed in western Jamaica over the last weekend as the murder toll in the country climbed to 360 since the start of the year.
The police have not yet released the names of the students from the University of Technology (UTECH) and the Muschette High School.
In addition, the authorities have confirmed that a Canadian visitor, who was shot is in a critical condition at hospital.
So far this year, 360 people have been killed as compared to 290 for the corresponding period last year.
Acting Police Commissioner Novelette Grant and members of  the High Command toured western Jamaica on Sunday to meet with divisional commanders to discuss crime prevention plans.
The acting police commissioner later told RJR radio that the law enforcement authorities are determined to stem the violence in western Jamaica.
