The United Progressive Party (UPP) plans to host a press conference relating to current electoral and other related matters today, Monday August 12, 2024.

This comes amidst the back drop of the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission’s (ABEC) commencement of its expired voter’s ID replacement exercise which is set to begin today.

Earlier this year, the ABEC reversed its decision to conduct a complete re-registration of voters, opting instead for a voter identification card replacement program.

According to the UPP, this change, aligns with the preference of the Antigua Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) and Prime Minister Gaston Browne.

ABEC’s initial plan for re-registration aimed to address the expiration of voter ID cards in March 2024, affecting over 40,000 residents.

Following consultations with the major political Parties, persons will now be required to renew their expired voter’s ID however, the UPP is opposed to this exercise with its legal team planning to challenge ABEC on the issue.

During a recent General Council meeting, the UPP voted to explore legal options against ABEC for what they believe to be a sudden change of the Commission’s first announcement of a complete re-registration.

The press conference will be held at Freedom Hall (Lower Newgate Street) beginning at 11:00 am.
