Two young Antiguans will pursue fully funded Masters degree programmes in the United Kingdom after securing prestigious Chevening scholarships.
The announcements were made on Tuesday via the ‘UK in Barbados and Eastern Caribbean’ Facebook page, which identified them as Latisha Browne and Annetta D Jackson.
Browne, a police officer who considers herself a true daughter of the soil, is passionate about crimefighting.
Currently a Forensics Technician within the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda, she holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminology and Sociology and a Post Graduate Diploma in Forensic Investigation from the University of The West Indies.
She currently serves as the 18th Antigua Girl Guides Association International Commissioner for Antigua and Barbuda, as well as on the Halo Foundation’s youth arm Generation Y, Cushion Club and JCl Antigua.
Browne, who said she believes in striving for excellence, also shared that it is her hope to become the first female ballistics expert in Antigua and Barbuda. She will pursue an MSc in Forensic Investigation at Cranfield University in Bedford.
Crown Counsel Jackson is employed at the Attorney General’s Chambers where she litigates in child protection matters and supports the human rights portfolio. She previously worked for the Directorate of Gender Affairs in the Ministry of Social Transformation, supporting the gender-based violence response and referral pathway.
Having technical experience in gender mainstreaming, Jackson serves on various government technical gender advisory committees, including the expert validation team for the National Gender (and Social Inclusion) Policy and Action Plan, as well as the Gender and Environment Social Safeguards Advisory Committee.
Over the past four years, she has been involved in gender justice advocacy through her work with local NGO Intersect Antigua and is a former Black Feminist Fund Fellow.
Jackson will pursue an MSc in Gender, Policy and Inequalities at the London School of Economics.
The Chevening Scholarships scheme is a global scholarship programme of the British government. The scholarships are awarded to exceptional individuals with leadership potential to study one-year Masters degrees in a range of subjects at UK universities.
