Tropical Storm Watch issued for Antigua and Barbuda as Ernesto approaches

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service (ABMS) has issued a tropical storm watch for the islands, set to go into effect at 5 PM today, August 11, 2024.

Tropical Disturbance AL98 is expected to be upgraded to Tropical Storm Ernesto and is forecasted to be near or over Antigua and Barbuda by Tuesday.

ABMS Director Dale Destin outlined several risks associated with the approaching storm:

  1. Wind: Medium risk of strong storm-force winds, with hurricane-force gusts possible.
  2. Rainfall: Medium risk of flash flooding, with 3 to 6 inches (75 to 150 mm) of rain expected.
  3. Seas: High risk of dangerous conditions, with waves potentially exceeding 16 feet (5 meters).
  4. Storm Surge: Low risk, but possible surges of 3 to 5 feet (1 to 1.5 meters).
  5. Lightning: Medium risk, with residents advised to prepare for strikes.

Potential impacts include disruptions to power, water, and communication services, damage to infrastructure, and risks to life and property.

The ABMS warns of possible closure of the country, damage to homes and businesses, fallen trees, and environmental degradation.

Residents are urged to implement their tropical storm plans immediately. While a hurricane is considered unlikely, it cannot be completely ruled out.
