1949: Ezzard Charles TKOs Pat Valentino in 8 for heavyweight boxing title.
1953: The birth of the first black man to play for England; Roland Butcher was born in Barbados but came to England at 14, and after success with Middlesex he was called up for the Prudential Trophy match against Australia at Edgbaston in 1980. He seized the moment with a charming, Hollioake-esque 38-ball 52 that won him a place on the tour of the West Indies the following winter. And he even made his Test debut in his native Barbados, but that’s where the Boy’s Own story ended: Butcher laboured against the short ball, made only 71 runs in three Tests, and was not picked again.
1968: American sprinter Jim Hines runs a world record 9.95s to beat Lennox Miller of Jamaica and Charles Greene of the US, and win the 100m gold medal at the Mexico City Olympics.
1987: Chicago Bulls sign first-round pick and future Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen.
1989: The fourth one-day hat-trick. West Indies looked to be cruising to victory over Pakistan in Sharjah when Wasim Akram clean-bowled Jeff Dujon, Malcolm Marshall and Curtly Ambrose with consecutive deliveries. Pakistan eventually squeezed home by 11 runs.
1990: SF 49er Joe Montana passes for 6 touchdowns vs Atlanta (45-35).
1998: Eric Robert Rudolph is charged with six bombings including the 1996 Centennial Olympic Park bombing in Atlanta, Georgia.
2001: German Ferrari driver Michael Schumacher wins his 4th F1 World Drivers Championship by 58 points from David Coulthard; takes out Japanese GP at Suzuka for 9th win of the season.
2002: Houston defeats Sacramento, 88-86, in an NBA preseason game. The game is remarkable because it is played in Shanghai, China, the first time two NBA clubs met in China.
2003: Fan Steve Bartman deflects the ball away from Chicago Cubs outfielder Moises Alou. Cubs give up eight runs in the inning and lose to the Marlins 8-3, and the Bartman incident is seen as the turning point in the series.
2018: Afghan batsman Hazratullah Zazai becomes only the 6th player in cricket history (3rd in T20) to hit 6-sixes in an over; scores 62 in 17 balls in Kabul Zwanan loss v Balkh Legends in Afghanistan Premier League.
