Two men injured in a shootout with police last week in Ebenezer – that left a third man dead – are continuing to recover in hospital.
Clinton Oliver, 31, and Kouna Joseph, 18, are both in a fair condition on the surgical ward at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, sources told Observer.
Oliver had been left critically injured with multiple gunshot wounds requiring emergency surgery, while Joseph also had gunshot wounds and a fractured femur.
Twenty-eight-year-old Jamar Smith, who was shot multiple times in the abdomen and pelvis, died shortly after the incident unfurled on August 15.
Police had been responding to a report of a brazen armed robbery at a Parham superette. A patrol team caught up with the suspected assailants a short time later near the Ebenezer gas station.
Police say they were shot at and returned fire. A firearm and modified flare gun were later found in the alleged attackers’ car.
The incident – which shocked passers-by and brought traffic on Valley Road to a standstill for several hours – followed the latest in a string of armed attacks on small businesses across Antigua.
Government has pledged a multi-million-dollar package of measures including increased surveillance cameras and drones in a bid to curtail the scourge.
