Two men injured in a shootout with police that left another man dead remain in hospital.
Clinton Oliver, 31, and Kouna Joseph, 18, were both left with multiple gunshot wounds after the altercation with officers on Thursday afternoon.
A third man – 28-year-old Jamar Smith – died after being shot several times in the abdomen and pelvis.
The trio are suspected of being involved in an armed robbery at a Parham superette shortly after 1pm Thursday.
Police patrols were placed on alert and one of the patrol teams later intercepted the suspected assailants’ getaway vehicle – a silver Toyota Mark-X – in Ebenezer.
Police say they were shot at, to which they returned fire. A gun, modified flare gun and other items were recovered from the scene.
Hospital sources told Observer the two surviving men’s vital signs are stable and the latest indications suggest they are likely to make a recovery.
The attack on the Parham store was the latest in a long spate of terrifying armed robberies that have targeted small businesses across Antigua.
Police Commissioner Atlee Rodney said patrols had been increased in response, and vowed that the force would “remain resolute in protecting the people of Antigua and Barbuda”.
