Stingerz upset Ovals as Potters win second straight

Stingerz handed defending champions Ovals Ojays their first loss in five games when action continued in Division One of the Antigua and Barbuda Basketball Association (ABAA) league on Saturday night.

Playing in the feature contest of a double-header at the JSC basketball complex, Stingerz outshot their rivals in three of the four quarters contested to win a fourth straight to move level with Ovals on eight points. However, Stingerz have played a game less.

Stingerz started strong, outscoring Ovals 19-9 in the first quarter before claiming the second quarter 19-4. The Ovals men however rallied to take the third quarter 22-11 but could not make it two in a row, going under 20-17 in the final quarter as Stingerz claimed the contest 69-62.

Jayden Andrew led the way for Stingerz with 25 points and nine rebounds while Devorn Benjamin had 12 points. There was a contribution of 13 points and 12 rebounds from Jevonte Valarie off the bench. Kerio Lee, who only had five points, was big on the defensive end, claiming nine defensive rebounds and another six on the offensive end for a game-high of 16. Dontte Trimingham chipped in with 11 rebounds.

In a losing effort, Joshua Minner hit a game-high 31 points and grabbed 15 rebounds while Kareem Edwards contributed with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Potters Steelers win a second straight on Saturday following a shocking 67-66 win over former champions Flyers on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Potters Steelers won their fourth game of the competition with a 77-56 triumph over All Saints Slam in Saturday’s opening game. The win came just two days after Steelers had recorded a major 67-66 win over former champions Flyers.

Steelers bolted out the gates, outscoring Slam 20-9 in the first quarter. The Potters men then took the second quarter 22-15 before claiming the third 16-10. Slam however outshot their opponents 22-19 in the fourth and final quarter.

Jacob Lloyd top-scored for Steelerz with 16 points while Cohen DeSouza added 15 points and nine rebounds to the winning effort. Ezekiel Francois top-scored for Slam with 18 points while grabbing 22 rebounds.
