ST. KITTS-CRIME-Police charge one man following fatal shooting at hospita

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Jun 24, CMC – The St. Kitts-Nevis police say they have arrested and charged a 23 year-old man with murder following the incident at the J.N. France Hospital that resulted in the shooting death of 31-yeaqr-old Darnell Govia.
The police said that Shakeem “Lil Nozzle” Mitchum-Cranston had been charged with murdering Govia, the 16th homicide in the twin island Federation so far this year.
The incident on Tuesday resulting in his death forced staff and others at the health facility to scamper for safety after the gunman entered the building firing several gunshots at his victim.
Police said that Cranston was apprehended shortly after the incident as a result of a coordinated response by officers of the Special Services Unit and the St. Johnson’s Police Station.
In October 2015, Cranston was himself a victim of a shooting when he was ambushed by three masked men, who pumped several shots into his body.
On Tuesday, the St. Kitts-Nevis government said it would not “back down or relent in any way” in its fight against crime in the country.
“Those bent on terrorizing the law abiding citizens and residents of our country shall be confronted and they shall fail. As our Prime Minister has repeatedly stated, in any confrontation between law enforcement and criminality, law enforcement must prevail,” Acting Prime Minister Shawn Richards said in a statement.
The Acting Prime Minister said that additional security is being provided at the hospital “to ensure that acts such as these do not reoccur. I assure them that their safety and security just as the safety and security of all our residents and citizens is of paramount importance to this government”.
The killing is the second such incident at the hospital in the past three years.
In September 2014, armed men entered the Emergency Room waiting area and shot 19 year old Kaheel Herbert, who was waiting for medical treatment at the facility.
