Spanish Heat sizzles while Flyers soar in Second Division Basketball

Spanish Heat and EZ Fit Flyers put on a good showing as both teams won by a margin of 23 points on Wednesday night at the JSC Sports Complex in the Antigua and Barbuda Basketball Association Second Division.

Playing in the first match, EZ Fit Flyers 2 (FL2) and Christos United (CCC) met in which the former prevailed in a 66 to 43 scoreline. The first quarter was a close one as CCC edged the victors 10-9 but they lost the second quarter by eight points (21-13), the third by a much wider margin of 11 points (16-5) and were only able to hit double figures again in the final quarter but still lost 15-20. Hansel Piper, Tyrese White and Rashaun Harry respectively scored 14,12 and 10 points for the winners while their opponents Neville Chambers and Manlght Simmons outscored them 16 and 15 points respectively for CCC.

In the final game of the evening, defending Champions Spanish Heat 2 (GSH) defeated Da Project (DAP) 88 to 65 in an evenly matched game. The first quarter saw DAP win by four points (24-20) but were overwhelmingly beaten in the second quarter 32-10. They were able to launch a comeback victory in the third quarter, winning 23 to 16 but then lost the final set (8-20). Heat’s Wester Baptiste was the top shooter on the evening with 26 points while Erwin Rodriguez (23 points and 22 rebounds) and Jesus Emmanuel (18 points and 16 rebounds) registered double-doubles.

For Da Project, Aiden Tonge and Nathan Matthew put up 20 and 16 points in that order. Tonge in particular was excellent on the three-point line with an 85% three-point average, while Matthew had a 75% average on the three-point line.

The division will resume on Monday with Old Road Daggers taking on Christos United in the first match, while Spanish Heat will battle Cutie’s Ovals in the final encounter.
