Shock, anger and devastation overwhelmed employees of Alorica, popularly known as NCO Financial Services after learning they had eight days to replace the income they will lose when the business closes.
Staff said the decision came down yesterday at approximately 11 a.m. that more than 300 people will have to hunt for a job when the call centre that services Amazon and MetroPCS ceases operations on June 29.
“I can’t stop crying. I can’t believe that after giving this company all these years that they are going to close and they didn’t even give us adequate notice. We the staff work hard and many of us live from pay cheque to pay cheque, yet we willingly report to work to be treated like this,” one distraught mother said.
The woman’s sentiments were similar to those of another employee who gave the company more than a decade service.
With tears in her eyes, the employee said she does not know what she would do because her monthly obligations, in addition to looking after her small family, will become a burden with no immediate job.
The employee who shook her head in amazement said staff sat in the lunch room in a “daze”, not optimistic they will all find jobs shortly.
But while the staff told our newsroom that they were informed of the closure yesterday, the Cabinet also issued a statement Wednesday night, indicating that the matter was discussed earlier that day.
The Cabinet notes from government’s Chief of Staff Lionel “Max” Hurst indicate that the government “has sought to achieve a number of concessions for the call center that will redound to the benefit of the workers. The owner of the building has agreed to reduce costs significantly; negotiations for lower broadband costs have also been pursued; and staff training to enhance customer service will be pursued in collaboration with the trade union.”
Hurst also noted that the Cabinet has determined that “it will assist all the parties—the workers, the management, the landlord, the service provider—so that the call center and its employees here can survive and prosper.”
