Iconic West Indies cricketer Sir Vivian Richards believes it is time for young Antiguan fast bowler Alzarri Joseph to be given more responsibility with the ball.

Speaking on the Good Morning Jojo Sports Show, Sir Viv said the 24-year-old fast bowler is not being handled “right” by captain Jason Holder and must be given an opportunity to prove he could operate under pressure.

“I think, sometimes, he should even have the ball before Jason because you can’t be having a young man like that, at that particular stage, and not using him. So I just don’t believe he is being handled particularly right at this time,” he said.

Scorer of 8,540 runs in 121 Tests, Sir Viv also chastised the regional men’s team for their lack of tenacity in the outfield, adding that the number of catches dropped throughout the series was not reflective of cricketers being paid to compete at the highest level.

“When you hear you’re playing at that particular level, the catches that we are dropping are amateurish stuff because you cannot have a team that maybe cannot put bat to ball on a regular basis and continue to be dropping all those catches. If it’s one thing you do, is make sure you continue to concentrate as hard as you can so you can see right around the board that we are not concentrating as well as we should,” he said.

West Indies went down by an innings and 134 runs in the first Test before losing by an innings and 12 runs in the second match.
