Former West Indies captain and legendary batsman, Sir Vivian Richards, has hinted that he could be looking to recruit players for a lucrative International T20 league during next Monday’s clash between the Caribbean Premier League’s (CPL) St Kitts & Nevis Patriots and the Cool & Smooth T20 All Stars.
Speaking on the Good Morning Jojo Sports Show this week, Sir Viv encouraged those players set to represent the country’s All Stars team to treat the match seriously as it could just be their ticket to the next level.
“There are so many T20 tournaments around the world and I, who is also involved in the PSL [Pakistan Super League] that I would be looking as well for individuals whom I think can fit the bill so don’t worry about the Chris Gayle and things like that and especially for our fast bowlers who would be engaged in the match, if you roll [get his wicket] him over that’s a feather in your cap,” he said.
The match, which will be played at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Ground starting 7pm, will feature the top players from the 10 teams which competed in the recently held Cool & Smooth T20 Explosion.
They will face the likes of batting superstar, Chris Gayle, international spinner Samuel Badree and captain of the Windies T20 squad, Carlos Brathwaite who will all appear for the Patriots.
Sir Viv warns that crawling into a shell because of such names could spell doom for the All Stars players, encouraging them to instead, aim at slaying the giant team.
“Especially with a lot of the T20 stuff that’s happening around the world, it’s a great chance for these guys in the Antigua & Barbuda team in my opinion, to be giant killers it is a wonderful platform at this stage for them to go out and perform and not be afraid because of some of the huge names that you have in the St Kitts Patriots so I just want the guys to go out and be yourself, express yourself and don’t let fear, nervousness, the fact of so many big names in the opposition but just go and do it,” the Antiguan said.
The encounter carries an entrance fee of $20 while children will enter for free.
The selection panel for the Cool & Smooth T20 Explosion had named an 11-man team and two reserves earlier this month for the pending contest.
The squad includes new Leeward Islands Hurricanes selectees, fast bowler Stanny Simon and all-rounder Terrance Ward who both represented three-peat champions PIC Liberta Blackhawks during this year’s T20 Explosion.
He is joined by the experienced Wilden “Polo” Cornwall, Kadeem Phillip, Jahmar Hamilton and Avier Christian –  all of Liberta Blackhawks.
Empire’s Owen Graham and Justin Athanaze have also been selected in the first 11 alongside Caribbean Union Bank (CUB) Bethesda Golden Eagle’s Austin Richards Jr, Bolans’ Orlando Peters, All Saints Pythons’ Kerry Mentore, Rising Sun’s Sherwin Peters and Montserrat’s Jason Peters.
The two reserves are Liberta Blackhawks’ Karima Gore and Tyron Williams Jr of Empire.
