Former successful West Indies captain and batsman, Sir Viv Richards, has commended the senior West Indies squad following their two-nil Test series triumph over Bangladesh, the regional squad’s first since 2017.

In the first Test, West Indies chased 395 for an unlikely victory over their host before rallying to win the second and final match by 17 runs on Sunday, with Antiguan spinner Rahkeem Cornwall claiming nine wickets in the match overall.

“To Jimbo [Cornwall] and all the guys and as one of the past old individuals, I am extremely proud of the guys because that’s a great win. It is not easy to beat Bangladesh in Bangladesh because Bangladesh has taken down the very best of them from the guys at the very top of the list, so what they would have achieved is just a marvelous achievement,” he said.

The team was led by Kraigg Brathwaite whose captaincy has also come in for commendation from the Antiguan.

“He’s just a cool individual and you’ve never seen him involved in any ruckus or anything like that but what I know for sure is that he eats, sleeps and drinks cricket in terms of his mental attitude. He may not be as flamboyant as the other West Indian batsman but when he goes in there he has a plan. He may not accomplish it all the time but he has a plan what he wants to get done and that was my first impression of him,” he said.

Prior to the tour, Sir Viv backed Braithwaite to do well in the sub-continent, adding that he admires the Jamaican’s passion and dedication to the game.
