Sir Richie calls on public to support food drive for Vincentians

By Carlena Knight

One of Antigua’s cricketing legends is calling on the public to come forward and support a worthy cause.

With volcanic eruptions continuing in St Vincent and the Grenadines, the living conditions have become extremely disastrous for some persons and has seen the demand for water, toiletries and non -perishable food items increase.

It is because of this why Sir Richie Richardson is stepping up in a major way with a food drive initiative.

Sir Richie shared that he came onboard with the initiative which was started by his close friend Rachel Browne, a Vincentian living in Antigua who would have migrated when the volcano erupted years ago.

He says he felt obligated to assist in some way.

“I have a lot of friends in St Vincent, plus they are our Caribbean brothers and sisters and we have to look out for one another. I have always been preaching of real Caribbean unity but, unfortunately, only when we have disasters — well apart from the West Indies cricket team — we tend to get together. I feel very passionate about it and I feel obligated to make a contribution and to help those in need,” Richardson explained.

He explained how persons can get involved and support this important program.

“We are asking people, whatever they can, gather it together and bring it to the Cedar Valley Golf Club and they will store it until we are ready to collect it, or if it’s easier for you to write a cheque to Anjo Wholesale or AS Bryden then we can go and actually purchase the things that are needed by the people. After we go and buy these things, we will pack them into a container and ship them. We actually shipped our first container already and we want to pack this one by this weekend and maybe leave Antigua early next week,” he added.

Persons that need more details on the matter can call Rachel Browne at 764-5531.
