The start of the Secondary Inter-Schools Football Competition has been postponed by a week.
The competition, which was slated to kickoff October 5 at venues across the island, will now start October 12.
Coordinator, Rowan “Porridge” Benjamin, said a decision to postpone the start of the competition was taken following requests from a number of schools that they be given more time to prepare.
“I’ve spoken to some of the principals and the coaches and because of the situation [with the hurricanes] where they were in and out of school, it created a problem with some of the teams. I feel that some of the schools don’t have enough time to put many of the things together, especially with their uniforms and all these things. We looked at it and some teams are ready but we decided that, for the benefit of all,” he said.
The former national coach also identified the unpreparedness of some fields identified for use by the Ministry as one of the issues affecting the scheduled start of the competition.
Benjamin said requests to have the venues prepared have fallen on deaf ears.
“We have some people who are contracted by the government to cut fields and some of these fields are not part of it so if they want their fields to cut they would have to notify the Ministry of Sports and they would offer what help they can. After checking on some of these fields, they are just not ready and the ABFA leagues would have started maybe earlier, maybe practice and so on would have been taking place in the community so that they would have looked after their fields,” he said.
In an earlier interview, Benjamin called on principals across the island to be more supportive of the sport.
He said some principals are not in favour of, not only football, but sports in general and won’t even allow their students to play matches outside of a specific time frame.
The Secondary Schools competition is expected to climax in December while the Primary Schools Competition kicks off in February.
