The company that signed the US $16 million contract for the proposed Barbuda runway has promised to start in two months and finish in less than a year.
According to BHM Company Limited’s Managing Director Ebbe Saidi “the site is fantastic” and his firm – based in the Bahamas – does not anticipate any environmental hurdles associated with the project.
“We have a designer on board who will design it over the next eight weeks. Our contract is for one year and our target is to beat that date. After those eight weeks from now we’ll be starting on the ground,” he said.
Saidi said the BHM was “looking at the environmental studies and we’re also doing geotechnical investigations” for the 6100-foot-long runway which is to be 45 metres wide.
There are also plans to do “a ground penetration survey to locate any sinkholes” but the managing director says any such sinkholes could be “easily remediated”.
