Commissioner of Police Atlee Rodney has unveiled plans to modernize the operations of the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda (RPFAB) through technological innovation in 2025, while addressing major investigations and organizational changes within the force.

In a recent interview, Commissioner Rodney emphasized the importance of embracing new technologies, including artificial intelligence, to enhance police efficiency. “There is a space for technology and we have to continue to pursue the different options that are available,” Rodney said, noting that while policing remains traditional, innovation is crucial for future success.

“We have to continue to have that culture change so that persons can embrace the technology that is available to assist us,” the Commissioner explained. “There are innovations, there are technology. Even now with artificial intelligence, there are things that can assist us in being more efficient.”

Addressing progress on high-profile cases, including the murders of Yennifer Bridge and Achazia James, Rodney confirmed collaboration with international partners. “I had a discussion already with some of the representatives from the British government,” he revealed while emphasizing the confidential nature of such cooperation. “As recent as last week, I had a virtual meeting with some of them, with the investigators.”

The Commissioner also addressed discussions surrounding any possible plans for the fire unit to be a separate entity within the police force.  “It’s a policy decision; at the end of the day if the government feels that there is a need for it,” Rodney said. “The assistance the regular police officers get from the fire complements the work that they do. So it will be a move where you’ll have to increase the number of police officers.

“We have to take risks,” Rodney added, emphasizing the importance of proactive leadership in law enforcement. “Sometimes you take a risk that might not be bringing the results you want. But that is part of leadership and that is part of being proactive in the police force.”

In conclusion, Commissioner Rodney said, “There are decisions you make, you learn from them”  in reference to author J Charles Maxwell’s quote:  “Some you win and some you learn.”
